Chapter Forty-Nine

This semester felt a little different from the last. Soon Track practices would be starting and without a certified public track, she had been limited to running around the local parks.

It wasn’t until one of her dormmates, Amanda, reminded her about the track in the Fitness Center that Elizabeth felt better about her conditioning before Track and Field officially began.

If she spent a little too much time in the Fitness Center running laps and doing sprints, none of her teammate dormmates noticed; they all had their own training and classes to contend with.

She had been introduced to the world of night classes as she took on a Monday night class for her education courses. There were a few other classes she’d need to take next year that had her wondering how she was going to manage to balance everything, but other Cross-Country and Track runners had managed it and she felt certain she would be able to as well.

Perhaps Elizabeth’s obsession with her conditioning would not have been so bad if she had experienced a full Track and Field season the year before. Or if she had not been constantly stuck around the Top Ten at the Cross-Country meets the semester before.

Maybe if she had shared a class with Flint, she would have something to focus on outside of school, running, and the library. However, with the lack of a system of checks and balances, old habits began to rear their head and Elizabeth once again became hyper-focused on the pursuit of perfection.

Unlike in high school, when she had friends and family constantly around, this time Elizabeth was on her own.

Nobody noticed how badly she was handling pandemic fatigue because nobody was around her enough to catch her obsessive habits.
